Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) is a division of Rio Tinto and is responsible for the global mining and export of bauxite and aluminium. Within Australia, a primary bauxite mine is located in Northern Queensland's Cape York Peninsula.

Project Overview

The Mission River Bridge is an integral asset for RTA's Weipa operations and the local community. The bridge provides a rail link between RTA's Andoom Mine and Lorim Point Port facility as well as access for RTA employees, local personnel and tourists. In 2010, the decision was made to upgrade the Mission River Bridge's concrete headstocks.

Scope of Work

Goodline were contracted by RTA to compete the upgrades of the bridge concrete headstocks and completed the following scope:

  • Construction of working platforms suspended from the bridge piers (the innovative design was recognised by RTA who awarded Goodline first place in the 2009 HSE Innovation Awards).
  • Construction of formwork and steel fixing
  • Pouring of 50MPa "super workable" concrete
